Rural & Urban Symbiosis -report

30.10.2024

The connection between rural and urban areas has grown increasingly crucial in a rapidly changing world. MTK published the first report describing the symbiotic relationship between rural and urban areas in 2020. The now-updated report of Rural-Urban Symbiosis was carried out to meet the present and future needs. The report highlights why cities need a thriving countryside and why a flourishing countryside needs cities. Such symbiosis is vital for a society that wants to succeed also in the future.

The report examines the symbiosis between rural and urban areas through ten elements. All these elements have in common that cities and rural areas actively interact with each other and there is no room for juxtaposition.

This symbiosis is essential for society. For example, well-functioning basic services in cities help create a vibrant rural environment around urban areas. In addition to permanent rural residents, these services are also vital for seasonal residents who live in rural areas for part of the year.

The significance of rural areas often needs to be addressed in discussions driven by urban areas. For example, over 60% of Finns live in urban areas, covering only 1.3% of Finland's total land area. These figures reflect the permanent place of residence, but multi-locality and dual identities bring rural and urban areas closer together.

Self-sufficiency and security of supply are emphasized in the current geopolitical environment, where strengthening this symbiosis enhances resilience. The biggest threat to rural-urban symbiosis now is the availability of labor in rural areas. The report aims to prompt readers to reflect on the themes that society needs to function effectively.

Green transition-supporting measures are being implemented worldwide. The symbiosis between rural and urban areas requires cooperation − rural areas provide most of the raw materials and ecosystem services needed for the green transition. At the same time, cities supply the workforce to make it happen.

A vital, cooperative relationship between rural and urban areas is essential for societal resilience and the green transition. Strengthening this symbiosis can address different challenges, such as the shortage of workforce in rural areas, and enhance sustainability, self-sufficiency, and balanced development across regions.
